The new Hubsan X4 Air – H501A although looking like a H501S is a highly advanced craft with lots of new features added. The most important ones are: X-Hubsan smartphone application control, WiFi connectivity and transmission booster, intelligent flight modes and live stream. Now what all that means ? Well it’s simple the Hubsan company has developed a WiFi module and implemented it on the drone and that permits control over regular WiFi network, this means full digital transmission of image and control. By doing this kind of communication you can now replace the bulky transmitter and use your mobile phone for control. Because WiFi is not that great for range Hubsan also though this over and added a WiFi booster relay in the packege, this will really open up the transmission up to 400 meters. If now we have smartphone control we can also have a nice app that will not only permit basic control but will actually integrate all in such as full telemetry, camera control, flight modes and of course live video.
Beside the above, the X4 Air also supports things like follow me, waypoints automated flight, automatic return to home and a series of fail safes such as loss of control or low battery. But this is not all, the H501A will also be able to bind with a H501S transmitter and you can control it and still have WiFi downlink working making this one of the best experience level. With the conventional transmitter you can reach 800-1000 meters control range !
The design of the X4 is exactly the same with the H501S and they use the same battery. What is also very interesting is the fact the the newer H501SS uses the X4 Air board but doe not have the WiFi module installed.This similarity means that the X4 Air will also work with the standard and advanced controllers from the H501SS.
The WiFi booster is a nice addition that brings a novelty to such kind of drone & control combo as most current drones which include the new DJI Spark will be limited to ~100 meters, after which the WiFi will fail and disconnect. The booster is a wireless repeater that will make the Hubsan reach ~400 meters full control range (including video). Last but not leas the repeater has it’s own integrated rechargeable battery so it will not draw power from the phone nor that you have to use a powerbank to supply power.
The new control mode has brought as the X-Hubsan app, which is stunningly looking similar with the DJI GO app, the general layout is similar and it’s very intuitive to use. The app will read the telemetry of the quadcopter and will give you full info such as battery level, altitude speed, distance, GPS status, etc. During the test I must say that the control is really nice and there is not a noticeable lag for commands, the things change when watching the FPV stream, sometimes it will get some large delays up to 3-5 seconds ! The app was under continually updates and probably it’s still improving.
The rest of the technical specifications are the same with the 501SS, it uses the same frame, same motors, same propellers and has the same 20 minutes estimated flight time. A less know fact is that inside the X4 Air there still is a 5.8 Ghz FPV video transmitter that will work with the FPV1 transmitter or a FPV Goggles set. This will be later investigated and tested.
